Commercial Approvals for Oral Controlled Release Technologies

Elan Drug Technologies’ suite of Oral Controlled Release (OCR) technologies has been incorporated and successfully commercialised into two dozen products worldwide. Our Oral Controlled Release Technology platform allows a range of release profiles and dosage forms to be engineered. Customised release profiles for oral dosage forms such as extended release, delayed release and pulsatile release have all been developed and commercialised.

In the 1980’s by applying the SODAS® technology, the drug delivery market was transformed when a calcium channel blocker that was given up to four times a day was formulated to be given twice a day and was subsequently formulated to a once daily product.  Annual sales for the improved Cardizem® products went from $100M to $900M at peak.

Since then Elan Drug Technologies has successfully collaborated with many large pharmaceutical companies and formulated improved products using its OCR technology platform.

The following is a list of some of the products that utilise Elan Drug Technologies’ OCR technologies:

Avinza®

Immediate release and extended release beads of morphine sulphate for once daily oral administration using Elan Drug Technologies’ Oral Controlled Release SODAS® technology currently marketed in U.S.

Focalin®XR
Once daily dexmethylphenidate for the treatment of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, marketed by Novartis in US, using SODAS® technology

Luvox®CR
Once daily extended release fluvoxamine maleate capsules for U.S. market using SODAS® technology

Naprelan®
A once daily form of naproxen sodium using the Elan Drug Technologies IPDAS® matrix technology, which allows for rapid disintegration and microdispersion in the gastrointestinal tract and reduced gastrointestinal side effects normally seen with naproxen.  Currently marketed in U.S. and Canada

Ritalin®LA
Extended-release formulation of methylphenidate with a bi-modal release profile, marketed in U.S.

Verelan® PM
A once daily, night-time chrono-timed version of the cardiovascular compound verapamil hydrochloride product using the CODAS® technology which provides therapeutic concentrations in the morning hours to correlate with normal circadian rises in blood pressure in the early morning.  It is currently marketed in U.S.

In an industry where improved formulation and combination products will account for an increasingly large proportion of industry sales, applying a commercialised technology as offered by Elan Drug Technologies can provide real patient benefits to compounds and is critical for a successful life cycle management strategy.
