The insoluble problem

It is estimated that in excess of 40% of compounds in development suffer from poor solubility, making them difficult to develop and resulting in a significant  number of potentially beneficial compounds being discarded in development each year.  EDT’s NanoCrystal® technology addresses this key problem for the pharmaceutical industry.
 

NanoCrystal^® Technology – now commercialised involves reducing the size of drug particles, typically to less than 2,000 nanometres. By reducing particle size, the drug’s exposed surface area is increased. The nanoparticles are then stabilised  to maintain their reduced particle size. The result is a stable drug formulation that exhibits an increased dissolution rate.

Elan Drug Technologies’ NanoCrystal^® technology is a drug enablement and optimisation technology applicable to poorly water-soluble compounds and is part of a suite of technologies that Elan Drug Technologies offers to clients. Our NanoCrystal^® technology has added real patient benefits to a number of compounds including:

NanoCrystal^® particles are small particles of drug substance, typically less than 2,000 nanometres (nm) in diameter, which can be produced using various approaches such as wet milling, homogenisation, precipitation and supercritical fluid techniques. The NanoCrystal^® particles of the drug are stabilised against agglomeration by surface adsorption of selected GRAS (Generally Regarded As Safe) stabilisers.

The result is an aqueous dispersion of the drug substance that behaves like a solution - a NanoCrystal Colloidal Dispersion^® composition, which can be processed into finished dosage forms for all routes of administration.
